What do a Dem from Hawaii and a Repub from Alaska have in common?

Answer:  Democrat Daniel Inouye and Republican Ted Stevens both sit on the Senate Commerce committee, which has scheduled a hearing about Voice over IP for March 14. Why? To expose the challenges surrounding E911 call routing via VoIP services, which, as you may already know, doesn't work the same as E911 on traditional land lines. Fortunately, the committee chairman, Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, realizes the significance of IP communications technology, and would like to see the E911 system reformed to take advantage of IP rather than the  approach that the big carriers have expressed a preference for: forcing cash-strapped VoIP startups to retrofit their E911 call-routing for standards that were developed 25 years ago or more.  Anyway, I expect some interesting quotes to come out of this meeting.
